Blackbird Guitars spent several years developing biobased composites for musical instrument applications. Working closely with Entropy resins, our efforts resulted in the first line of Ekoa® instruments. After achieving exceptional performance and aesthetics, it was clear that many other potential applications existed, so Lingrove was founded in 2014 to help other products benefit from our R&D efforts.

Building off of Blackbird and other existing projects, we can help you integrate biocomposites such as flax linen and Ekoa® to create better products.

Our design center is based in San Francisco's Mission district along with other facilities in the Bay Area. Ekoa® production process takes place domestically and our biobased materials enable worker-friendly, domestic production.


We offer design services to support various phases of research, design and development.

Joe Luttwak

Joe, founder of Blackbird Guitars composite string instruments, has over a decade of product development, composites and design experience- including a stint at Ferrari in Italy and with various San Francisco product development firms.

Joe, with his team at Blackbird, have been working with natural composites since 2008.

Desi Banatao

With experience in both industry and research, Desi leads applications engineering and materials design for Lingrove. His experience includes developing and commercializing new material systems ranging from semiconductors to composites. He has held positions at IBM and Inphi Corp, and holds a BS and MS in Material Science and Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

He also runs Entropy Resins in his free time.
